North of Lisbon, near the border with Spain, the gorgeous Douro valley can be explored. Known for its world-famous wines, this valley has tonnes to offer.

A MIX OF TRADITION AND HISTORY

Home to the third largest river in the Iberian Peninsula, the River Duoro, this valley is resplendent with greens and blues, and has an ethereal feel to it that will immediately instil feelings of calm within you.

It is also the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, creating a sense of tradition and history that is in keeping with the region’s reputation. There are also excellent restaurants in this region, meaning a stay here can be done in a truly luxurious way.

North of Lisbon you can also find Coimbra, a riverfront city in central Portugal that is the country’s former capital, and thus has its own rich history.

The red-tiled buildings retreat up the hill overlooking the river in a similar style to Lisbon, and the preserved medieval old town is certainly worth a visit. There is also a famous university in the centre known for its Baroque collection. Beautiful views, excellent dining options and a rich history mean that this is not a city to be missed.

PORTUGAL'S SECOND LARGEST CITY

Porto is also located North of Lisbon. This is Portugal’s second largest city, and is renowned for its huge bridges, traditional buildings and excellent wines.

This coastal city features a wonder range of churches, cobbled streets and an amazing palace.
