PROPERTY DETAILS
Formerly the Dutch ambassador’s house in Portugal, today Firefly Quinta has lost none of it’s opulent charm and comfort.
The principal entertaining area features a colourful custom-made kitchen and "smeg" range oven. In a cosy corner, there is a wood burner and sofa, perfect for relaxing drinks in front of the fire, with views over the hill. The inter-connected dining room table opens onto the terrace with huge opening glass doors, allowing for barbecue and al fresco dining options, so the entertaining space inside and out, is amazing whatever the weather.
Along the ground floor corridor are two bedrooms perfect for guests and or children with a shared bathroom, (all are fitted in micro-cement), with walk-in shower. The master suite features an enormous en-suite decadent bathroom, with hand crafted tiles, walk-in shower and free- standing copper bath from India. The three floors are connected via custom-built wrought-iron stairs. On the top floor are two en- suite double bedrooms with south-facing views and desks to die for. Downstairs, there is a self-contained flat with en suite bedroom and kitchenette, a sauna with shower, and a game room kitted out with pool table and table football. The pool table opens out onto the outdoor area and optional ping-pong table outside. There is also a dedicated TV room with Roche Bobois sofas to lounge on and a 75 inch 8k television for cinema experiences and Netflix.
Within the garden is a heated pool with sun-beds and umbrellas next to a somewhat bumpy croquet lawn. Tucked away further down, is an award-winning curvaceous hobbit house, with complete kitchen and bathroom, sleeping two people in complete romantic solitude, with just the sounds of frogs and owls to keep them company. Below, the pool area is a somewhat rough and ready tennis court, complete with basketball net, practice wall and trampoline.
The quinta is a self sufficient working farm, so the fenced-off valley side is home to two rare Portuguese female donkeys, Sky and Willow, two rescued pot-bellied pigs, Poppy and Peggy; and a little gaggle of geese and chickens, all of whom are discreetly cared for each morning and evening by the owners via a separate entrance. This ensures complete privacy for guests all hours of the day and night. Casa da Mata is located at the end of a cul de sac and is the starting point for a myriad of stunning mountain bike and hiking trails stretching up and across the entire National Park. Surfing at Guincho is just a 5 minute drive away, Cascais 10-15 minutes for restaurants and shopping, and the world heritage site of sintra is just a 15 minute drive or 40 minute cycle. The owners of the quinta are passionate about conservation and the entire quinta is in the process of being rewilded. No chemicals are used at all, and the meadows and flowerbeds are left purposefully overgrown to provide habitats for bees and rare animals, big and small. Giant lizards, fireflies, eagles, genets, badgers, foxes and salamanders all call Casa da Mata home. This is not the place for those seeking sterile designer luxury or perfectly manicured lawns. If your idea of escape is the scent of flowers, passing bumblebees, and the call of donkeys demanding cuddles, this is the place for you.
